I had the pleasure of talking with Don a couple of weeks ago and discovered a few things our readers at TriFive.com might want to know.
Don is Texan from birth. He was born in the Ft Worth area and continues to live nearby. He has 5 children and 7 grandchildren, which I am sure keep him very busy if working on his '57 Belair isn't enough. He retired from IBM after 36 years working as a computer technician -- several of those years he was traveling for business. However, when I asked him if he could be anywhere in the world right now, his rapid answer was, "Right Here!" I understand Texans all to well as I am married to one. You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can't take the Texas out of the girl.
Don has been holding out on us Chevy lovers as he told me he has a '56 2 door in the shed and a '66 Corvair in the driveway -- good to see Ralph Nader didn't get them all. His present project car is a '57 2DHT. He has taken a little break from car work while doing some remodeling around his home. He expects to get the '57 on the road by the end of the year. He said, "I've always loved TriFives." He loved them enough to buy a '55 when he was very young. If I am not giving too much away, he bought it used in 1957, and kept it about 10 years. In fact, at the same time, his brother and his father were both driving '55s -- his dad's was a truck. What he drives on a daily basis is a GMC van or the above-mentioned Corvair. Good to see a Chevy man stick with his brand!
Asked what his proudest achievement was, he simply answered, "My
home." He
built the house himself -- no contractors involved. He comes by his wood
working skills naturally and mentioned that it is his favorite hobby outside of his
TriFives. His father was a woodworker and he feels he picked up a lot of his
Dad's skills in both woodwork and mechanics.
I asked him what he would do if he won the lottery. He said, "Make sure my kids are all taken care of. I would get them each into a house and make sure they would be secure." He also mentioned that he would buy a nice finished TriFive so he could drive it while working on his '57. When asked who his favorite character from history is, he replied, "JFK." I am sure that has something to do with him being in downtown Dallas excitedly watching the motorcade pass by only moments before JFK was assassinated.
Acardon is a great "go to" person for answers to specific electronic questions. Working with IBM has given him an insight to solving electrical issues. He will answer your questions with ingenuity and gives you the determination to make it work.
I asked Don, "What one thing would you like to say to every member of TriFive?" He said that his biggest frustration is when someone asks a question and he and other members post answers or solutions, but many times the person asking the original question doesn't reply back. I am sure I am guilty of the same thing. However, in thinking about it, we're all on TriFive.com to help each other out. If you never hear that your solution is used and the people who ask the original question don't at least respond with a thank you, it makes the time you spend answering the question seem wasted. I agree with Don and I will try to do better myself to let people know that their hard work and knowledge is appreciated.

Don, thanks for taking the time to let us get to know you a little better. We're all looking forward to hearing how your '57 is coming along.
